I learned something a long time ago...sometimes it is better NOT to get the last word...ex: Someone has said something very nasty. I say nothing. (Sometimes because it has hurt deeply. Sometimes because I am afraid I will say something that I will regret.) When I say nothing, their words ring in their ears. They have a better chance of remembering JUST what they said; a better chance of realizing that MAYBE they could have been kinder. Had I gotten in a "tit for tat" the likelyhood of this happening would be slender. Meanwhile, I feel ok because I did not engage in a conversation that would surely have resulted in something regrettable. Remember that song,"When You Say Nothing At All." ? A pretty darn good title.
