The white plug hidden somewhere in the car is a diagnostic data link. Plug in a scanner check the code and see what the engine computer saw. Record the code and write down the freeze frame data. That way you will save the snap shot of what the car was doing this time, so when the light turns on again. OBD II short for on board diagnostics second generation codes begin with P0001 to over P1000 generic scan tools will only be able to test emission and engine related codes. Some auto transmission and antilock brake codes and airbag codes climate control codes WILL not be available to Generic Scanners Hope that helps

reset? unplug the battery, wait about two minutes, then plug it back in. it clears the back-up memory on the ecm
