With all of the bad side effects that we know about ADHD medication, why am I getting such a hard time trying diet changes and behavioral modification in my child to control his ADHD rather than just shove some pills down his throat? It seems to me that I'm being told "Ritalin.. so much easier than parenting"

There is a good discussion of ADHD (attention deficit disorders) in Murray & Pizzorno's Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine, Bill Gottlieb's Alternative Cures, and Balch & Stengler's Prescription for Natural Cures. MonaVie juice helps some kids. Also see pg 167-169 in Magnet Therapy by Lawrence & Rosch.

My nephew stays with me and is taking something for ADHD (not ritalin). I would prefer not to medicate him, but even with it, he is difficult. He is loved and taken care of, but chemically he is off, which is why we have medicine to correct that stuff. It is a major stress dealing with the affects of ADHD, but things are so much worse without medicine.

Some parents are lazy, true. They medicate their kids to get them to go away, leave them alone. Meds should be used in conjunction with behavior modification, diet control etc. It really is a multi-faceted approach that is best for your child.

Because ADHD kids are exceptionally bright and the teachers like them mellowed out. There used to ber gifted childrens programs in schools to keep them stimulated but now there are only special needs programs.

In the long run you are doing the right thing for your child. Its hard to do. I remember when my son wa going through the alternative approach, when he was younger, and someone gave him orange jello - the red dye made him out of control.

The school cannot force you, but they will intimidate you. I refused to have my children vaccinated after the problems my eldest had, so I had to have it documented that I was sane and have the mayor notarize an affidavit.
