The best treatise I ever read can be found here: http://brainstorm-services.com/wcu-2004/fairystories-tolkien.html . The html link on that page doesn't work but the pdf file of the document does. It is the essay by J.R.R. Tolkien entitled "On Fairy Stories." It gives real insight into not only the form but the purpose of fairy stories. Enjoy!
