They are still around but more like a mafia rather than paramilitary organisation now. I'm sure they did, maybe even do, recruit in Scotland. Glasgow has a lot of hardcore republicans.

For as long as Ireland is divided That is to say Ireland and Northern Ireland exist ther will be some form of resistance to the domination of England over Northern Ireland. I believe that Sinn Fein and the IRA were a proper and necessary entity in Northern Ireland or all of Ireland for that matter. Hopefully the IRA and Sinn Fein will carry on and exist for the protection and reunificartion of Ireland. It is a travesty of justice for a nation to be split regardless of what that country is or what its beliefs are. England and its English people have historically been responsible for more bloodshed and tyrrany than any other empirical nation. I say "Give Ireland Back to the Irish" and long live the struggle for a reunited Ireland. Keep Sinn Fein and the IRA alive until the day that Ireland is joined together again. This struggle is a fine example of religions and their differences causing bloodshed and war amongst mankind.

This is getting more and more annoying... let me guess you're American aren't you? NO the IRA are currently involved in a ceasefire, if you heard about a recent bombing that was the REAL IRA which are an entirely different group than the IRA and much less active in the late 1900's just read the news, you know you can read Irish newspapers on the net, please do because I have a strong feeling that you are being severley misinformed about the situation over there.

The IRA are still very much around. They technically disarmed but it's pretty obvious that they didn't hand over everything. They are mainly involved in criminal activities (rather than political) these days. I'm sure it's not a recruitment tactic but I was your son I'd be seriously careful. If he cheats on his girlfriend he could lose his kneecaps. The IRA don't mess around.

You are normally born into it or grow up in a strong hold (an estate where they are in control) they recruit from London manchester anywhere they are Irish. I have been to a pub in North london(the black horse) Islington in hollaway road which was an IRA pub. I did n't know and drop a log when i found out!
