In post-colonial times, the 1-st medal was the gold won by the hockey team in Helsinki, 1952.
In post-colonial times, the only medal won other than in hockey was a bronze in freestyle wrestling, but off the top of my head I cannot tell you who it was and were, plus the bronze medal of Leander Paes in tennis.
P.T. Usha was close to winning a medal in the women's 100 m hurdles in Los Angeles'84 which would've made her the first Indian woman Olympic medallist, but ended up 5-th.
However, India won a lot more golds in hockey than a lot of other countries in all disciplines taken together...

controversies a galore.considering IOC records the indian 1928 hockey team if team sports considered.however norman pritchard a St.Xaviers student on a vacation to london won 2 silver.the IOC credit it to GB.
