For as long as Ireland is divided That is to say Ireland and Northern Ireland exist ther will be some form of resistance to the domination of England over Northern Ireland. I believe that Sinn Fein and the IRA were a proper and necessary entity in Northern Ireland or all of Ireland for that matter. Hopefully the IRA and Sinn Fein will carry on and exist for the protection and reunificartion of Ireland. It is a travesty of justice for a nation to be split regardless of what that country is or what its beliefs are. England and its English people have historically been responsible for more bloodshed and tyrrany than any other empirical nation. I say "Give Ireland Back to the Irish" and long live the struggle for a reunited Ireland. Keep Sinn Fein and the IRA alive until the day that Ireland is joined together again. This struggle is a fine example of religions and their differences causing bloodshed and war amongst mankind.

The IRA are still very much around. They technically disarmed but it's pretty obvious that they didn't hand over everything. They are mainly involved in criminal activities (rather than political) these days. I'm sure it's not a recruitment tactic but I was your son I'd be seriously careful. If he cheats on his girlfriend he could lose his kneecaps. The IRA don't mess around.

Just because the IRA isn't pursuing the armed struggle doesn't mean that they're sitting back doing nothing. However, I think you might be overestimating your son's worth to them. Why would they spend 100 grand just to recruit him? Even so, it's not a good position for him to be in, as it will probably make him feel obliged to them for a long time to come.

The IRA has disarmed. They do have some organized crime connections in Northern Ireland. Don't allow your son to get involved with them.

Yes, probably! The IRA will not simply disappear, even if it seems that way to some. Would you "give" a house to someone and expect nothing in return? Open your eyes!

Anyone that is involved in the (P)IRA, C-IRA, or R-IRA would not, and should not discuss their membership so the person is possibly talking bollocks, however the PIRA are known to have property in many places in Ireland, Britain and Eastern Europe which has many uses.
The OIRA, PIRA, CIRA or RIRA are not terrorists, but fighting those (Britain) who inflicted and still try to inflict terror and who also try to rule part of Ireland.
