I have an account in friendster and I've located (and they also found me) people from way back, as long as they are members. You can search them by name, hometown or by school, etc. Try it you'll never know who you'll find.
Try other beta sites.

Do you know what high school or college they attended? Register with classmates.com and reunion.com and see if they are also listed. Also, try a search on 411.com and the people finding tools on yahoo and excite search engines. Check on myspace.com by doing a search. Contact mutual friends to see if anyone else knows where they are. Do a google search of the person's name. Do you know if their parents still live in their hometown? You could try contacting them.

Try friend's high school's alumni web page. Some of them have a way of contacting people you used to go to school with. Good LUck.
