It so depends on what you want to do with the machine, If it's going to be left in one place get an iMac. Bigger screen, bigger hard drive and more comfortable to use over a longer period of time. If you need mobility, get a macbook. Terrific machine, fast, good looking and a joy to use. Plus you get the benefit of taking it outside to show off to others :-)

You have no idea what you are talking about go onto ebay and check the price of Macs from 3-4 years ago, now check the price of an HP from then.... there will be a huge difference. Macs last a long time and retain their value.
As to the question this is highly dependent on what you want to do with it. Macbook obviously has the mobility factor, yet the Imac have a larger screen so if you will be viewing alot of things on the screen the bigger screen realestate might be better. For 1,299 according to the mac site you can either get the 13.3" macbook or the 17" imac. The Imac has a larger harddrive, and a dedicated video card. The macbook has a slighlty faster processor, not a difference you would readily be able to tell the difference.
So what it comes down to is do you want mobility?

well actually, i have had my imac g3 since 2001, and i have had no problems with it. macs are very reliable computers. i have an imac g5 and a macbook pro. both have been very good so far. i would recommed the imac because it is built better than the macbook, and lasts longer.
