I've rebooted it, and it's gone really slow.

That could be anything. Spyware is quite a common cause.
Extra memory normally helps but I recommend you download Spybot Search and destroy from http://www.filehippo.com

The easiest and consequently costliest is to buy more RAM for it. The probelm is you might not have a free slot for it.
What you can do however is remove some of the programs that you no longer use. Also chage the defaults on any programs that start up automatically (eg. windows messenger) so that they no longer do this, as several programs are trying to start at the same time windows has finished booting will ultimately grind your pc down.
If you right click on your C drive (or the letter of your primary hard drive) click properties. From here click disk cleanup. This will calculate how muchjunk on your pc can be deleted to free up room. When you get rid of this stuff, click toold (while still in the properties box) and choose defragment now. This will defragmet the harddrive which basically means it moves files around so that they are not split over the harddisk in differnet sectors. This will increase the disk read speed and reduce the amount of searching that the CPU has to do to locate fragmented file pieces. This takes a long time depending n how badly fragmented your harddrive is as well as the harddrives size.
Finally go and get some spyware scanner like spybot and search for ad ware which could be hindering the speed of your pc.
Doing those simple things will help increase the speed of your laptop noticeably.

Use your anti-virus, update it and scan
Then run your ant-spyware solutions. I recommend AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destroy. You can use the free versions from http://www.download.com

Through the START menu, use RUN, then type MSCONFIG and GO. Pick the Startup section and turn off some of those startup items that you do not need.

Run Disk Cleanup, then Defrag

MORE RAM would help. Visit http://www.coastmemory.com and look up your model laptop.

Gee, I hope that you don't have one of those Pesky Dell laptops with exploding batteries. (bought after April 1, 2006)

As others say, defragment your disk and remove unwanted startup processes/programs.

Also try optimising your Registry (a set of files that contain a vast arrray of the vast majority of your computer's settings - even down to the teeny-weeny things) - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_registry for more.

Don't worry though - no need to get your hands dirty: there're a whole raft of programs out there for free or a small fee to do it for you! Just try typing "registry" into somewhere like download.com or tucows.com ...or there a selection of handpicked, reviewed ones here: http://downloadsnew.pcpro.co.uk/Utilities/Registry/Registry1.html

Use it on the train?? It could be a number of things. Your hard drive could be jam-packed, you would need to free up some space and maybe defrag it. You could have a virus of some sort, try using some anti-virus software.
