if your laptop has white dvi outs or blue vga outs, you can have your laptop monitor plus an extra monitor plugged in at the same time. then right click your desktop(if you are using windows xp) go to properties, then settings. there should be a box with a 1, and another with a 2. click the box that enables a dual screen, and set the resolution for your other monitor. ideally, you would have a monitor that is the same size and resolution as your laptop. this should do it. if not, go into the settings of your graphics card from there and turn on the second monitor from there. i cant be more specific about that part because you didn't tell us which graphics card you have. if you have ati, and you go to settings, it will redirect you to catalyst, and that should be self explanatory to use.
