14 is such a dangerous age. Just try to keep the lines of communication open.

This article is about the genre of music. For other uses, see Emo.
Emo is a subgenre of hardcore punk music. Since its inception, emo has come to describe several independent variations, linked loosely but with common ancestry. As such, use of the term (and which musicians should be so classified) has been the subject of much debate.
In its original incarnation, the term emo was used to describe the music of the mid-1980s Washington, DC scene and its associated bands. In later years, the term emocore, short for "emotional hardcore", was also used to describe the DC scene and some of the regional scenes that spawned from it. The term emo was derived from the fact that, on occasion, members of a band would become spontaneously and strongly emotional during performances. The most recognizable names of the period included Rites of Spring, Embrace, One Last Wish, Beefeater, Gray Matter, Fire Party, and, slightly later, Moss Icon. The first wave of emo began to fade after the breakups of most of the involved bands in the early 1990s.
Starting in the mid-1990s, the term emo began to reflect the indie scene that followed the influences of Fugazi, which itself was an offshoot of the first wave of emo. Bands including Sunny Day Real Estate and Texas Is the Reason put forth a more indie rock style of emo, more melodic and less chaotic in nature than its predecessor. The so-called "indie emo" scene survived until the late 1990s, as many of the bands either disbanded or shifted to mainstream styles.
As the remaining indie emo bands entered the mainstream, newer bands began to emulate the more mainstream style, creating a style of music that has now earned the moniker emo within popular culture. Whereas, even in the past, the term emo was used to identify a wide variety of bands, the breadth of bands listed under today's emo is even more vast, leaving the term "emo" as more of a loose identifier than as a specific genre of music.

You should only be concerned if your daughter is expressing dangerous behavior like having no friends and being in her room all the time. Otherwise, it's a music scene. I am into Gothic and Punk music. I, of course, dress like a goth/punk when I'm not working. I am an adult now, but my mother and I were open with each other. I found that my friends who had moms that criticized everything they did (their dress, music, friends) often lied to their moms and sneaked around doing things behind their mother's backs anyway.

However, my mom took me shopping, expressed her concerns and regularly told me when she thought I may be crossing the line. I appreciated that and kept very few secrets from her. Heck, even a lot of my friends talked with my mom when they needed help.

Cutting comes from being overwhelmed or depressed. When someone cuts, it releases endorphins that relaxes the person like a drug so it's not just some weird thing that some kids do. BUT if people have an outlet, someone they can trust to LISTEN (don't just hear and then argue) they are often kept from doing destructive things.

Honestly, while most of the people I know have continued to be Gothic and Punk into "older" ages, they refine and mature naturally, meaning the clothing and attitude grows up as well. That doesn't mean that in two years she won't go, "Gee, mom, remember when I was emo?"

Emos are a little pretentious to me, but they are far from lame as other people have said. They get more people messing with them than punks and even goths get. They are punks emotional cousins, but rarely as dark as their fellow goths (though they are often mistaken as goths because they too wear black and sometimes a lot of make-up). Emo did emerge from the hardcore punk scene and is RADICALLY different then it originally was. Emo-core is closest to the original emo scene. If you give your daughter a little room the worse of it will be maybe music you hate and some really bad poetry.

Lastly, learn a little about the scene. Know a few bands. Check out a few lyrics. Surprise your daughter with a CD that fits into Emo but that you approve of. She'll be shocked and she'll know you are trying to listen to her. And there are tons of clean (I don't know your religion, but there are Christian emo bands) emo bands out there.

It's just a phase, yet another phad that's taking on across the nation. I like the guy who said at least u have a daughter not a son into that. Yeah it's pretty much the goth thing, sans paganism and industrial music. Just a bunch of whiny boohoo teen crap. Just be concerned anyway, it's your job as a parent. once again, 14 is a very dangerous age, especially now days. You have to realize kids are doing things they shouldn'd be younger and younger with each generation. Case in point, myself, by 12 I was smoking, by 13 a pagan, etc. I'd pretty much knocked out all the typical things parents aorry about before age 16, I'm 23 now, and scared about what my younger sisters are up to. The Emo thing, fine, you may not like it but pretending u tolerate it is the best way to get in tight with your daughter and keep an eye on what she's up to. Trust me had my parents been like, so enlighten me, I'm interested, instead of hey stop that crap, I probably would have stopped. All else fails really pretend ur into it and she'll run from it screaming, the last thing some kids want is to have anyhing in common with their parents at that age.

I think it is wonderful, when young people think about life, and decides on an attitude. My daughter is 17, she has not declared herself an emo, but we talked about the different groupings of young people, and the guy from her class that she likes the most is an emo, she told me. I know him, he is a marvellous kid playing in a band. We agreed that emo guys were the most interesting.

You should be a little concerned. EMO is just emotional. But it has a wider meaning. Keep a good concern however.
Good luck.

emo just means emotional actually , emos usually have black hair thats long in the front over their faces and wear black quite a lot , a lot of the ones i know wear a lot of makeup (black of course) etc. , the emos i know are cutters and stuff like that , usually cries and complains about just about anything . id be concerned if your daughter is into that , ask her what kind of 'emo' she is or wants to be etc. and if shes like the one i mentioned above then ask her if shes just doing it to fit in and stuff , i think if shes not doing it to fit in then i think you know what to do after that... hope its just a phase shes going through though.

well, be glad you have a girl into that and not a boy. because the boys into that are ust plain gay. they wear tight girl jeans and baby tees....they have donald trump combovers and they cry a lot. they think they are something unique, but that crap is all over mtv.

all you should really be concerned about is her wanting to get her lip pierced like all those other kids into the emo thing.
