I think that you addressed your friend the correct way. Who said that a male & a fefemale can't be friends?

Klo-Jann:
If you do not want anyone to think that you two have a romantic relationship, it is safer and better to call her "friend". You have no romantic feelings for her, do you?
If you do not mind being jeered having a "relationship" with her, you can call her "girlfriend".

Women seem much more at ease calling a female friend a "girl friend". You would never hear a man refer to his pal as a "boy friend". If it;s easier, just refer to her as a friend.

I would think "friend" that way you she won't think that you have any romantic feelings for her and you can avoid any misunderstandings. Good Luck
