Is he a pedigree creature? If so, look at his family tree, there may be a common name that his antecendants had which you'd want to continue with for his show name. One of my sister's mounts was called 'Howden Springtime', and I think the 'Howden' part came from the horses father or mother, can't be sure. On the yard, the horse was called 'Springy'.

You know, it's hard to name a horse without seeing it, but for a black horse, maybe 'Panther' would be a good showname. For a oriental twist, how about 'Kokuba', which would be the Japanese for 'black horse', or 'Kokukishi', 'Black Knight'. Or how about 'Shadowfax'... that's the name of Gandalf's horse, but it was a grey, so it may not be the best either. How about 'Shadowstill' for the showname then, if he came from the same lineage as Springtime did, he would then be 'Howden Shadowstill' ;) On the yard, you can call him 'Shadey', or 'Shades' or something. If you went with 'Panther', on the yard you could call him 'Terry'. Or Bob.

Really though, naming a horse should be more personal than this, I'd talk with your family about it, I think that's normally what my sister did... I didn't have much of a say, but then, I've never really been that into horses...

Race horses have some funky names. I once saw Egg and Bacon racing in the 3 o'clock at some derby, when I was in the betting shop, borrowing a pen to fill out a birthday card.

I liked Dessert Orchid, Red Rum, Shergar.

My suggestion would be Amethyst, Amaranth, Sprint Reaper, Garrison, Jet Stream, Night Terror, Black Panzer, Lightning Bolt, or Well Hung.

Maybe even Hung Like A Horse.

Most show names can be created using the names of the parents and then the stable name is usually a shortened variation of that. Without the parents names...
Jump for the Moon - Moon
Starry Starry Night - Star
Straight and Narrow - Nathan
Leap
Midnight Glory - Night/Nigh/Ning

Sometimes horses have foreign names and the stable name is the english version. Depends on the breed. I had a welsh pony called Prince and his show name was LLandred (his sire's stud name) Pendefig (Prince in Welsh)

I used to do jumpjudging for three-day eventing, and one of the best names I came across was "Hoof-Hearted". That was his formal name - no idea what he got called in the stable! Put it this way, the announcer called the horse by rider number, not by name...
(say it out loud, if you don't get it!)

Seriously - if your horse has any breeding, you can make his name up from either of the parent's names. Or call him what you like - as long as it's unique.
Stable name - whatever he'll respond to!
Use something close to his current name, as he will know that it's him being spoken to.

Best of luck with the show-jumping.
