The mother. It's the only one which is related to the child for sure. You never can be certain if the semen came from the guy who claims to be the father.

Originally it was the Father that officially made recognized by the religion as Jewish. Because so many men where marrying Babylonian women and diluting the ethnicity a new law was made to dissuade this. The new law states you are recognized by the blood of the mother.

Personally I think both models are messed up. My sister just converted to Judaism and has no proven blood on either side.

On a faith level it depends on what you believe, and on a genetic level it depends on whether you have any lineage on either side stemming from far back. I'm sure if most of us investigated our heritage we might be surprised to find quite a bit of Jewish blood in our genetics.

This is a very interesting question- the answer is that the Jewish people rely on the MOTHERS side not the fathers side to determine if they are Jewish.

Interesting, most religions and governments follow the fathers bloodline in the form of last names.

I've heard that the Mother's side does. But that sounds a little crazy to me-if your Pappy is all Jewish how could he not be counted as a Jew? Many Jewish males can trace their paternal line to Israel(at DNA genealogy labs-where all people can trace their racial and ethnic origins). Many Jewish males can trace their ancestry to Moses and his brother Aaron, you remember them? From the 10 commandments.
