Speaking as a former criminalist, the easiest stuff to use was iron powder -- I just dipped a wand with a retractable magnet into the powder, and there's an instant brush. Iron powder is just as black as carbon, so prints were easy to visualize. Just stick a piece of tape over the print and transfer it to an index card for point-by-point comparison. To clean up, just retract the magnet when you're done, and the iron powder falls back into the jar. Cool invention!

There are a variety of powders, vapors and liquids used to reveal fingerprints these days: graphite (yes) and finely divided clays, and calcium carbonate, and toner powder (like from a laser printer) and cyano-acrylate vapor, and so forth.
The complete inventory expands all the time as new techiques are developed. Most make an awful mess, though and the police are pretty bad about cleaning up after themselves.
