Has anyone thought they had a urinary infection or been told by the doctor that is probably what it is and then it turned out you were pregnant?

Also - the litmus test where they test the urine for infection, would they use the same test to test for pregnancy?

Seeing as im not a nurse and i asked the question, i obviously dont know. There is no need to be like that. I think it is both but i really dont know as im on the pill and take 3 packs in a row and still have the remainder of my last pack before i can see whether i have missed my period or not.

To Viynl_Mad,

I had unprotected sex just over 4 weeks the 18th day of my first pack of pills (yes i take three packs then a break). I have had various symptoms including tiredness, like my period has been going to start for the past 2 1/2 weeks, stitch, going to the loo more frequently, backache, pains all round the abdomen. I went to the doctor 1 1/2 weeks ago as i had kidney pain but no pain when passing urine and she did a test and said there was a little blood in my urine but that it was only a slight infection and just to take parcetamol. That pain has now subsided but all other symptoms remain. I took a preg test two weeks after sex and it said negative but i think that may have been too soon. I also have a funny taste in my mouth but i wouldnt say its metalic, i just feeling odd thats all.

As stated previously, the tests for a UTI and for pregnancy are different. If you're still having pain and other uncomfortable symptoms after taking all of your medicine for your UTI - you should return to the Dr. Other things commonly follow or accompany a UTI (at least they were known for doing such with me) to include a kidney infection or even a possible gall bladder infection.

If you think you may be pregnant, try a home test again and/or have your Dr check you out. If the pain of the UTI doesn't go away w/in a couple days of finishing your meds, return to the Dr for a followup. Also remember that you need to hydrate well during an infection to help flush all the crud from your system. Drink LOTS of water, juice, and clear soda. Avoid a lot of caffeine and no alcohol.
Good luck!

I would go to the doctor and ask them if they could do both tests for you just in case. The pregnancy test the Can do straight away there in the room and you will know in minutes. The other test might take a few days to get the results back. Good luck

The litmus test does not return false positives in the case of a pregnancy; that is, it does not confuse a urinary tract infection with a pregnancy or vice versa.

They do NOT use the same test for pregnancy. Tests for pregnancy usually check hormonal levels in the blood or urine.

the pregnancy test is for testing the levels of hormones in your body called HCG, for UTI the test is for bacteria levels with in the urine as a UTI is usually bacterial as apposed to viral, but they can be viral...sorry to be confusing...What do you mean that you have taken 3 packets of the pill in a row? do you mean you haven't had your period in three months? Do you have any other pregnancy indicators?

I am a nurse and would like to help you if you want me too.

i think the tests a different.
if you're still unsure about being pregnant take another test or go back to the dr to get her to test for pregnancy, its best to do this sooner rather than later because if you are pregnant you shouldn't be taking meds or the pill as they can harm the baby in the critical three month period

They are different tests, but usually pregnancy doesn't hurt like a water infection

Well I am pregnant and I've had a UTI duriong my pregnancy. Really nasty, painful and horrible,

I felt like I had a really bad dose of flu (not good as I already had really bad morning sickness!) and was laid up for a couple of weeks. I had to have a course of strong antibiotics!
