Going straight has the right of way. But of course when has the right of way meant a whole lot in California?

Anyone going straight in California always has the right of way. A left turn is the most dangerous turn, because it crosses oncoming traffic, and so by law, it yields to all other traffic, including a right turn.

If you are at a lighted intersection that does not have a protected turn, the driver who is going straight has the right of way. After the road is clear of any drivers going straight, you may then turn.

The person going straight - unless there is a "GREEN TURN ARROW" that is illuminated. In all other cases, the left turning vehicle must always yield. This is true - even in California.
