Purple skies appear at times during sunset in places closer to the equator. Canada being rather far North, it is inclined to see longer periods of purple skies due to the sun refraction of light. The sky is blue because the sun prefers to refract off water vapor in the sky. At farther angles, it refracts off other molecules, more commonly with the sky showing an orange or red on many sunsets. Canada is a perpetual sunset during part of the year in far north locations and the solar inclination angle causes a purple hue given the right conditions.

I think what you are seeing is the Earth's shadow going up through the atmosphere. Canada is fairly far North and this could make it easier to see than nearer the equator.
;-D Is the sky purple at Noon, or in the evening?
