Well it could mean that chatting with you doesn't require their full attention...Or it could be that your friend is simply chatting with more than one person at the time...Or he/she could simply have a slow internet connection, be a slow typest, be a little shy, not want to say the wrong thing... When the words are barely there...simply excuse yourself by typing - Say, You seem to be a little preoccupied...how about you buzz me later if you want to chat more???...If you never get buzzed then that should be your clue to back off and leave that person alone. Don't make yourself look desperate by begging someone to chat with you...just let them know you're there if they have the time and if not that's cool because you have other things to do also.

Fist have you informed this particular that you feel as if they are not paying attention to the conversation? I can only speculate that your friend is chatting with other people sending IMs and trying to keep up, or this person is not aware that they are not giving you their undivided attention, on the other hand they could just send you IMs because you send them IMs and not really be into chatting with you.

It can mean a lot of things. Person is busy doing work while on the computer. Talking to other people instead of you. Doing online banking. The list can be endless. Do not let your feelings be hurt by IM'ing. IM's are a little dispassionate in the way people relate to each other. Talk to them in person or on the phone. Ask them how they are in "real time". If they are too busy to talk they will tell you. You will be better able to tell if you are getting blown off by the tone of voice you hear.

sometimes it could be that your asking or talking about a certain subject too much...like sex or about relationships...sometimes it gets old and they really don't want to hear about that anymore...maybe they really just want to chat about how things in life truly are treating you and what is new in life and what your intrests are truly...not just some sexpheen who wants to screw all the time, or to hear someone complain about their relationships all the time. Man, I've been on both sides. It sucks! Take Care and Good Luck!

It just means they are probaly chatting with tons a people at once. Don't worry they will talk to you eventually. Believe me I felt the same way, then I learned not to get so jealous or scared that they didn't like me.

Maybe your friend doesn't really like to be on the computer chatting too much, they may be really busy, or don't want to talk to you anymore or at that time.

It could mean that this person has a million other chats going simultaneously, or could be attending to something else. Don't take it too personally, unless your friend is also unattentive IRL.

Maybe your friend is preoccupied with something else, doing too many things at the same time. Ask an of the wall question and see what your response is, good luck. :)

Could be they are doing something while chatting with you, they are sleepy or you are just a bore. I would not worry about it if I were you.
