Aretha has to be number one - her singing on "Wholly Holy" off Amazing Grace goes beyond brilliant and into the supernatural.
Then Etta James - just great personality & character. "The Pick Up" has to be one of the greatest recordings ever.
Karen Carpenter had a great, distinctive voice, but it was all a bit white bread for my tastes.
Mariah & Whitney - lets call it a tie - great technique, but not much else, and what a lucky day for Mariah Carey when she swallowed that whistle.
Stevie Nicks was distinctive, but not brilliant, so she gets my vote for the next place.
Beyonce sounds to my ears like every other modern R & B singer. I'm sure she's all right, but I wouldn't know her if I heard her on the radio, and her songs are all kind of forgettable. It's all about her butt, isn't it? That's all people talk about with her, not that she's a great singer.
Paris Hilton - haven't heard her. I'm sure she's as good as the average ex Spice Girl. Bottom place, then!
Patti who? Smith? Labelle? I don't know who you mean, so forget that one. Both great and distinctive singers though, but I have no idea who you're referring to here!
Jennifer Halliday, I think, who sang on the Dreamgirls soundtrack - did a song called "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going" - now that is a vocal performance. It's like Everest! You should definitely check it out, it'll blow your head off.

Aretha-10, Mariah-9.5, Patti-8.9, Etta-10, Karen C.-9.5, Beyonce-9, Stevie N-9.2, Whitney-10, Paris-8.5
Aretha, Etta, and Whitney are all in a class if their own...and therefore are incomparable as vocalist.
Added: I hope you meant Paris from American Idol...and not Paris Hilton...'cause then I'd have to rate it as a 0!

Take Celine Dion outta the photo and they are all impressive. Aretha Franklin is clearly the staggering as a vocalist. I mean, none of those others have the status to do a Presidential Inauguration. Madonna is impressive. She is unquestionably proficient, because interior the damn close to 30 years that she has been doing theere were actually 1000's if not thousands of similar lady solo pop artists who've come and lengthy gone. shop in concepts Tiffany, Samantha Fox, Debbie Gibson or Kim Wilde? Yeah, a number of y'all probable ought to seem those females up because they have dwindled to entire obscurity. BA: Bette Midler is a finished diva. yet she's impressive. i might want to also upload Cher, and Barbra Streisand. Cher and Babs are only great. BA3: lots, too many to call.

I agree with the guy who said Allison Krauss. But Annie Lennox is an awesome vocalist (who unfortunately sometimes chooses crappy songs on her albums.) And the young Joan Baez.
Mariah? Beyonce? Marketing creations.
