If they are from a different ethnic background they have at least taken the time to learn the language which people who speak English don't.

I would never judge a person by their language skills unless they are not speaking their native language. That is just laziness. Every person must have the ambition to learn. If you are a foreigner, and English is not your native language, then I applaud you for your willingness to try to speak the language as well as you can, because although you have learned the language through a course or other learning experience, it can and never will be as good as if you were raised speaking English fluently. And a very important and proven fact that practise makes perfect is very true. I personally would love to see these smart alecks that comment on others English skills speaking a foreign language. One should always encourage not discourage and make fun of others. And if they are not good in speaking English, I am sure they are good at something else. But one should also keep in mind that with English being the Universal Language, everyone should try to learn it.

Language is purely a medium for communication. What good is my 'good English' when I travel to countries that are fiercely proud of their language e.g France
Unfortunately in the countries colonized by the British like India speaking good English takes on a different connotation especially if you want to work in MNC's. Its also a requirement for the numerous call centres that have mushroomed in India.
But other than that NO speaking good English does not make you great.

English is very difficult to learn if it is not your first language, and I have always had a lot of respect for people who immigrate and have to learn it. For that reason, I try to be patient, and I don't get upset about people who don't speak English well - it is not the only language in the world, and it would be ethnocentric of me to expect everyone else to be fluent in it.

sadly so, because it has become an international language providing you with a cosmopolitan air if you speak it. they say you can have an edge if you communicate using the english language, tho i don't really believe a hundred % in that, whatever edge means to them. the japanese or chinese express themselves in their native tongue, if ever they do they don't speak english well, but their country is just as successful economically as the english speakingnations, so, take heart.
if it bothers you though, why don't you learn it as a second language. you don't have to be fluently twangy about it, just the basics and you're on.

English has certainly attained the profound status of a global language. It is beyond doubt a powerful language of computer and internet. So the simplest answer to your question is" if you are not good in spoken English, then try to be". And i am sure that it would surely prove to be an additional distinguished feather in your cap.

I speak great English but I think I'm great because I'm 6'5" and 240 lbs. of brute twisted steel bands wrapped around sinew bone and muscle and no one messes with me....... Yo hablo perfecto espanol tambien.
What does piss me off is people who try to speak English and get butt hurt when they suck at it. Take a chill pill and keep practicing you'll do just fine.

I am betting that those people's English is far better than the American's Chinese/Russian/Hebrew.

Don't be afraid to start with kids books, also, if possible watch TV with the closed captioning on, most of the time they get the words right.

I would commend you on actually TRYING to speak the language of the country in which you live. What upsets me is people who have lived here for years and still refuse to learn the language.
