simply you will need
(1) motherboard ....which is what everything else is attached to,cost=between £30 and £150
(2) processor....the brains ...also known as the cpu cost=£35 to £600
(3) memory(ram) needed for smooth running of the computer, the more the better at least 512mb pref 1gb price £60 for a 1 gb module
(4) hard drive for long term storage (sizes 40gb to 500gb)again the bigger the better ,avalible in 2 interfaces udma and sata price £30 to £300
(5)graphic card for all the flashy visuals you see on the screen and for intense gaming,,go for nvidia and ati and spending more is a better option ,,,,cheap cards are slow price= £15 to £500
(6) sound card not always needed but a good extra if you can afford it go for soundbalster x-live series price £20 to £200
(7) optical drives dvd and cd-roms are a must on a p.c go for a dvd-rw as it does everything and saves buying a 2nd drive price £20 to £60
(8) case and power can be bought together buy a good power psu at least 400w price £ 50 to £150
this is a rough guide and as you can see its a case of you can save money by making it or you can end up spending loads
i have just built the pc i am using now ,dont be scared of a build ,its just like putting a jigsaw together, just remember to follow instructions and allways have your motherboard manual to hand
good luck

If you dont know what hardware you need, i wouldnt even bother building it.
To put it into simple terms: if you didnt know you needed bricks to build a house, do you seriously think you could do the plumbing?
I'm thinking you should stick to a ready made Dell.
Or will you know to use motherboard mounts, not to touch certain components in certain places, to GROUND yourself, to change BIOS settings, to use a certain cable, to connect a certain device, to possibly change jumper settings, to hook up all the power/reset/sound cables, etc?????
From your already inept knowledge, it sounds like building your own computer would probably tun into a complete disaster. I think you should save yourself the potential loss of £500 and instead just buy a system that is ready made.

If you look at Dell's outlet prices on refurbished PCs, you'll probably find that you can't buy the parts cheaper than that. Unless you want to build computers as a hobby, its a losing proposition. Plus, you'll have support for the entire system, not just the individual components.

Unless your upgrading an exisitng rig, I would buy one, it will be cheaper.
Dell laptops and desktops start from £250 and that includes the operating system.
