Exercise. Ok, that's easy to say.
Find something you like doing. Cycling, swimming, running, or play sports, anything. The important thing is that you enjoy doing it. Find friends that also enjoy doing the same thing and get together a couple of times a week and have a good time at it.
The point I'm getting at is that you have to enjoy doing the things that is going to get you fit. Dreading doing exercise is no way to go about it. Fair enough, the first couple of times you may find that it's a chore, but it's got to be enjoyable to you so that you'll stick to it. Something I keep saying is that an exercise programme not stuck to is as good as none at all.
Once you get into the swing of things, build up the intensity of your exercise. If it's swimming, try to do more lengths in 10 minutes for instance. Try better your time at running, find a more challenging route to cycle up. This will not only keep you motivated as it gives you goals to achieve, but it will also give your body the chance to better itself and get fitter. Remember, your body will grow accustomed to what you make it do. To get it to get better, you have to give it more and more difficult things to do.
Do some weight training if you can. This will make you stronger and (contrary to popular belief) improve your flexibility. But if you've not done weight training before, get someone to show you the ropes and what to do and what not to do. An experienced friend, or even better, a trainer if you can find/afford one. Important thing to bear in mind is that you're not there to lift as much weight as you can - you're there to stimulate muscle growth and strength by making your muscles work harder than it has before (this doesn't necessarily mean heavier weights). Pay close attention to your exercise technique, form, range of motion and speed (don't jerk, swing or move too fast as you'll only use momentum, not muscle).
Eat sensibly. Remember what your mum told you about eating the right proportions of food. Minimise fat, minimise processed sugars and processed foods. Eat meat in moderation (if you're not vegetarian). Eat plenty of fruit and veg and drink plenty of water. It's boring, I know. Fad diets come and go, but the basics are still the best thing to follow. The key is to be sensible.
Do not drastically cut down caloric intake. Your body needs a certain minimum level to function. The general guideline is 2500 calories for active men and 2000 for active women. Drastically cutting down below this may lower your metabolism rate and result in you feeling tired, actually not losing fat (you may lose weight in the form of fluid loss though), and your health will start to suffer. Remember - be sensible.
But that doesn't mean that you shouldn't cut down. Reduce your caloric intake if you're looking to lose weight. But be sensible about it. See the link below to find out roughly the minimum your body needs, and a sensible number of calories you need to eat to lose weight. The key, again and again, is to be sensible.
Last, but not least, rest. Get the rest that you need so that you'll be able to recover from your physical activities and be ready for the next. Try and get at least 7 hours sleep. Feeling tired and lethargic will only make you want to skip your sport/exercise and demotivate you. Once that happens, it's a slippery slope back to sedentary-ville.
Good luck and have fun!

join a gym. i've recently started trying to lose weight but its hard work, i cut out the junk food, etc, and do exercies everyday but it is slow to come off. but if you join a gym and maybe hire a personal trainer once a week or so then it should come off you a lot quicker.

Swimming is good on the joints and does not cause injuries as the water supports your entire weight.
