I'm going to be 36wks on Tues. I can't even desribe to you how much Tums has helped me. My doc said it's 100% safe so no worries about that.
One time, I was at a mall a few towns over when the heartburn hit. It was SO brutal and I didn't think I could stand it. I ended up running into CVS and downing 3 tums before I even left the aisle. From then on, I kept a bottle at home, one in my purse, one in the car and I had one at work. Never again would I be caught without my magic heartburn eraser

I had BAD heartburn to the point where I couldn't push when it was time. Milk seems to help but really it's just temporary relief. I went through tons of TUMS, tried Pepcid nothing worked. Finally found sweet relief in Apple Cider Vinegar. I would pour some in a shot glass and sip it down. It worked wonders!! They wouldn't let me have it when I was delivering the baby, but gave me something called Bicitra instead. It was intensely sour and made me vomit. After that I was fine though. Good luck and hang in there. Oh and you could restrict your diet but I know that even water gave me heartburn.

Milk or if you can't stand milk, Carnation Instant Breakfast in milk. I find now that coffee (I know that's not good in pregnancy, but I'm not pregnant) with a lot of light cream and one sugar gets rid of heartburn. Maybe the occasional cup of decaf with a lot of cream in it would be ok to get rid of heartburn.
Stay away from tea without milk, tomatos and tomatos sauce, crackers that are salty and/or burned-looking and maybe wheat bread. (I know everyone is different, but those are the things I find most heartburn-producing.)

My doctor told me to take Pepcid as often as I need it (but no more than the recommended dose of 2 a day). She said it was perfectly safe for the baby and so far it's worked extremely well. I have no heartburn and he hasn't been affected (still kicks up a storm).

Eat small meals at frequent intervals; this will go a long way towards easing discomfort. If you suffer from heartburn at night raise the head of your bed by for or five centimetres (a few inches); this is not recommended, however, if you have swollen ankles.
