Are you sinking? Quicksand is solid little particles suspended by a gas or a liquid - they support each other in a very delicate framework (like a house of cards) that doesn't hold weight. Due to the space between particles it is not as dense as mud - so down you go. If it is air based you are out of luck, Water based you will smush the little framework and be in some water - the problem? those heavy little particles close over you 'sucking' you down. Pick up a bucket of sand and see what I mean. Solution? Create more surface area - 'swim' out. Try not to disturb it. Drop to knees etc. Horses and deer have been known to do this so you can too. It frequently forms where sand or sand and water can cover holes - so in swamps, at the beach, or most deadly where the wind creates air based quicksand. The Sahara has mountains and huge areas under the sand and the wind forms quicksand on top.
