Because the boys are pampered and take things for granted. Despite having proper education, they simply do not grasp the concept of conscription army well enough to stop themselves from bitching about it. In addition, most exercises and events are not taken seriously in camp or training, since most of the servicemen, including the 'regulars', simply just choose to take the easy way out and perform the accepted minimum, so that it wouldn't take up more of their time or eat up into their personal time. Such mentality has been cultivated over the years, and it takes more than just tax-money and regimentation to change.

Well considering that you give two years of your life and putting everything on the hold, some guys might feel that they had wasted the time that could have been better used to complete their studies and further their careers.

And complaining about NS doesn't mean they are negative, people compare notes about their own experiences and for singaporean guys NS is something that we can all bond together over, so whilst the guys may be bitching about how tough NS life
was, they may be also be enjoying telling others how tough they are to have "survived".

as a male currently serving his national service i understand and empathise with your colleagues.

NS sets me back 2 years in terms of university admittance. and when i finally matriculate, i must revise everything.
Some of the regimentation in NS is very useless and in my opinion has no purpose or objectives.
Allowances are so low that it's ridiculous.
And the 2 years is followed by 10 years of reservist training.

does this sound like fun at all? and mind you this is only the tip of a really big iceberg.

Singaporeans lived very stressed lives. We also have very high standards of ourselves with regards to being efficient. Complaining is one form of expelling stress (and in the case of NS - total boredom). When we complain, it is with respect to something else. Making money would be high on that list, or making out with someone or enjoying life. One can spend time in NS doing nothing - waiting around, doing things that are no-brainier, etc. To some this is a pure waste of time and freedom. But in spite of our complains, all of us know the necessities of NS. If a war were to break out, you would be thankful that in spite of these complaints Singapore would be safe.

I think this is a good question.

I have often wondered how the Swiss and Israelis feel about NS in their countries. I dont hear the Swiss complaining about it..at least vocally.

'Cos it takes only 3 months for the Malaysian NS (National Service) program to train boys into men whereas it takes 2 long years for the Singapore program to do the same thing. And as a fringe benefit, girls are also included in Malaysian NS program.

cos most Singapore guys are too sheltered and some may feel they are unable to take on the physical training..

of course there are also ppl who don mind...and in fact enjoy NS and reservist....

Most complain because of the duration of the liability.

most also complain abt the poor income...and mostly they feel they are cheated by govt in a way or another...

In my office, female of my age all are my senior, and most are my supervisor. All thanks to the 2 and an half years NS with $200+ allownace per month. And I still have another few years reservist to go. That's also one reason why Singapore girls have difficulty finding a husband of same age.

Why are you so positive about NS? Might as well sign on as a regular... then you will hear REGULARS complaining about NS too...

Let them complain. Let us boost our own male ego. We can complain as much as we can. When the country is threatened, just pass to us a rifle and we will show you how we deal with the threat. Most of us here knows how to operate a rifle in day, night and in all conditions. Your colleagues are trained to kill. Don't belittle them. Be proud of them and remember that as you are sleeping tonight, somewhere out there is always a group of men watching over you, on land, air and sea. That's our arm forces. You can sleep in peace with them around.
