We have our first child on the way and my wife wants to change our Audi estate for a car which can have a child seat right up front with the driver. Aside from the HOnda SRV are there any more which are good cars in their own right? We haven;t the space for a large 4WD

I can only think of two cars in Europe with a central front seat - the Honda FR-V and the Fiat Multipla.

However, to put a child in the front, you'll have to disable the passenger airbag.
This will mean that if your wife is in the other front passenger seat, she will not be protected by the airbag (there is one airbag for the driver, and one for both passenger positions.

The safest way is to have a normal car, and put the child in the back. Alternatively, disable the front passenger airbag, put the child in the front and your wife in the back.

Some small MPVs (e.g Renault Scénic) have a central rear seat that can be slid very far forward so that a child in that seat is within reach of the parents in the front.

Your child will probably be in a rear-facing child seat for a few months, then switch to a forward-facing one. Is it worth changing your car (with all the expense that always entails) just for a few months?

What ever you do, make sure there are no active airbags (front or side) within reach of the child seat - an inflating airbag can put quite a violent force onto the seat, harming the child.

One can put forward facing car seats in front in most cars so long as there is no airbag. It is never a good idea though in any car and any car seat expert will tell you that the child is simply safer in the back.

Go for a Vauxhall. They can switch the airbag off for you making it safe for the kiddy seat in the front.

As for looking like a chump, wait till you get the pram out the back you'll think the car seat is nothing compared to that.

BTW go shopping on your own with the kid......TRUST ME!!!

All car manufacturers recommend you do not put child seats in the front seat because of the air bag

Honda FRV has 3 seat up front, not sure if that's what you meant by SRV.
