The main mechanism for attraction without contact [action at a distance] is by setting up a field, and magnetic, electric and gravitational field are the only three fields that physicist know as of now.

well all elements can be effected by magnetism , it depends on the strength of the magnetic field. A small field seems to attract only iron or similar elements, but when u you use a really large magnet, it will attract other elements.
example , a very powerful magnet is used to take pictures of u in a MRI machine, there are experiments conducted in which levitation of objects such as Al, ceramics ...etc occurs with increased magnetic fields, google it

Magnet attracts iron, nickel and cobalt. No other elemnt are known to be attracted by a magnet. After you keep any of these materias in contact with a magnet, they become magnetic.
Mechanism of attracive force of the magnet is explained by microscopic currents that exist inside (rather, by collectve behaviour of atoms, but that's too much detail). You are pretty much stuck with whatever material your already have for magnets.
