It wasn't their fault, it was their destiny. Fate is a good way of putting it since they had to reunite once they left the mortal world. And this is exactly what Brahma explained to Ram.

The author's.
As far as the story is concerned, it's Ram's fault. As we all obviously know that Sita was in no way responsible for the split. On second thoughts, she could have tolerated Mr. suspicious Ram, who cared more about people's judgement on his wife than his own. Never mind.

If they had lasted forever then this place would have been heaven. But , my dear this is earth or 'prithvi' as they call it. And Ram was none other than Lord Vishnu reincarnate. His birth as Ram was on special purpose .Satya Yug was nearing its end. Dwapar, Treta and Kali Yugs were to follow. He (the Almighty), had to continuously remind his children(us) about his existence and so He took birth as Ram.
My dear,it is not that they couldn't last as an ideal couple but that He (the Lord) had planned it so.Nothing in this Universe happens without Him.He is the all pevading truth and only He determines what's next. That Ram and Sita couldn't last forever is because he wished it to be so. He expects us to understand that although Ram was Divinity incarnate he had to go through all the joys and pains of being born here. From this we must learn that sorrow and happiness are two sides of this coin called 'life' and none is spared from experiencing both of them. In understanding this we learn to be calm in sorrow and composed in joy.We learn to accept inevitabilities and not get carried away and this is how we become 'sthitapradnya'(ie we do not deviate but stay on our path) which leads to enlightenment and total bliss.
If only the whole world understands this simple logic ,we can all break the shackles of 'maya' and attain 'moksha'.

this thing is not fault but , this situation shows us d height of sita's purity n understanding. cause if sita will not allow her purity test ram n sita both ashamed for further life. so sita did it for ram only n then she can't live more cause her femaleness totally broken. we have learn 4rm this.... sita n ram r d best couple but they r also not perfect so whenever we r serching d perfection in our partners we have to give them some more relaxations thats y we can leave porperlly n happly.

Ram's fault cause he listened to a nasty comment from a person and sent sita in Jungle....relationship is based on mutual trust and not on the comment you hear

Rama's fault for not accepting Sita's explanation. He didn't trust her.
