It's the current language of diplomacy, hence why it's so widespread throughout the world. It doesn't have the most speakers though. I think that's Mandarin.
Anyway, English is prolly the most widespread, as again, it's diplomatic. But, before English, French was the diplomatic language in use, and before that, Latin. Sometimes languages become disused.

yeah right english doesnt have any freaking rhythm, try spanish.
English is the language of money.
Spanish however is the language of let me freak you all nite.
