Mac commercials make you think that PC's are bulky, repetitive, and way behind. What's ironic is that Apple recently ditched IBM -- the decade-long manufacturer of their CPU technology. They balked at their original claim that IBM's CPU was superior, then switched to Intel and the "x86" platform. So much for being "unique" and "innovative". That move flat-out admits that Apple is chasing the PC.

The truth away from the propaganda in their commercials is that there's nothing a Mac can do that a PC can't.

Though Macs are generally better out of the box, by no means are they more powerful. How can it be, especially now that it has the same type of CPU? The debate isn't about the hardware anymore, it's about the operating system and software that's available for it. You will find more offerings with the Windows platform, and most importantly, it will be easier to find help from a friend, relative, or online when you need it.

Plus, if hardware in a Mac breaks down, good luck repairing it yourself. Most of what's in a Mac is "proprietary" (that means non-standard). With a PC, you can replace parts yourself for cheap and for the most part is easier to do. That's a side of the story you don't hear often. Buying replacement parts from Apple can get quite expensive.

Macs do have one thing going for them -- the MAC operating system. When compared to Windows, it's arguably easier to learn and navigate, and can be just as powerful to customize. For someone with little or no PC experience, it can be the better decision if you want to get started in multimedia (audio & video) right away. Also, there are a lot less threats and vulnerabilities to worry about, since it's not a big target right now by script kiddies and hackers. That will change soon though, as Apple gains more of the market share over time. But for now, it's a pretty good alternative in that respect.

Nothing against Mac's overall - I just feel they're more of a pretty package with hidden maintenance costs.

roxyzfoxy4u,
I think you read the first paragraph and stopped. Perhaps you missed my comment about Macs being "less vulnerable" to viruses because most target the PC. Don't be naive and think that only Windows is, however. Every OS out there (Linux, BeOS, Mac, etc.) can all be hacked and attacked by viruses and trojans. It just so happens that not enough people have those products for hackers to waste the time...

I am a hardcore computer user. I use my computer for Music (play the guitar and the Violin), work (microsoft office etc), video (editing, video watching), downloading (I've had my computer on all day long for about 3 years, with some weekend breaks) and well pretty much everything possible.

I have a PowerBook G4 which I bought about 3 and a half years ago. I switched from a top of the line Vaio just to see what the difference was (I was in my univeristy years so thought i might give it a try).

I have not had ONE probelm with my mac. ZERO maintenance costs, I don't even know where there is a mac shop in town, because i have never needed to go to one for anything.

Macs do crash, its a lie that they don't.... but they Honestly don't crash as often as PCs... that is a 100% fact. They don't have as many viruses....the operating system is just so much easier to use once you break free from the windows mentality (it took me a month to get used to it...after using windows all my life). Its just so much better for me and for what I use my computer for.

The funny thing is Maximum PC magazine ran benchmarks on the newest Mac. It actually runs some applications like Adobe CS2 in XP faster than it runs the same app in the Mac OS. And because there are different ways to run XP on a Mac, you should be aware that using the wrong method (emulation) will cause it to run slower than molasses.

And who cares if you can run 3 OS's on a Mac. You can run any OS you want on a PC. I don't see the advantage with that point.

And what about "stability and ease of use"? That's strictly a matter of opinion. I would argue that a properly maintained Windows PC is just as stable if not more stable than any Mac. I hear Mac users complain all the time about freezing in applications, so don't feed us the bull that they're perfect.

The truth is that ever since Microsoft released Windows XP, "crashing" has been a real thing of the past. The threat isn't poorly written software or piss poor resource management in Windows. All that has improved significantly.

Now the threat is yourself. If you surf a lot of crap websites, you're bound to get yourself infected with something, whether it be spyware, viruses, or trojans. Windows sometimes continues to get a bad rap because of all the dumb-a** users out there that haven't got a clue about security. It's akin to a white guy with a sweater tied around his neck walking down a back alley late at night downtown whistling zippidy-doo-dah! They haven't the faintest idea that they're drawing attention to themselves.

Because there is less out there targeting the Mac operating system, dumb-a** Mac users don't get themselves into as much trouble (though it still happens, and will happen a lot more since Apple has switched to the x86 CPU).

Don't be fooled into thinking one is highly superior to the other. It's whatever floats your boat. Personally, I prefer the vast offerings of software and games for Windows. Apple is not bad, but it's like the Coleco Vision of the software/gaming world still trying to catch on. Hopefully it does eventually...

If you want to go the value route, it's hard to beat due to these reasons.
1. runs 3 different OS's.

2. stability and ease of use of the Mac OS.
3. Final Cut Pro only runs on a Mac.
4. Less malware targets Mac
