This is about jewelry: Can anyone tell me the difference between platinum and white gold/silver by looking at it? You know how a cubic zirconia and a diamond may differ...is it the same with platinum? (I'd appreciate some actual facts if you can provide them)

Platinum is an entirely different metal then gold or silver, and doesn't usually have the same sheen, or shine, brilliance when made into jewelry as gold/silver. Platinum doesn't tarnish (as easily) as gold/silver, but this depends alot on the alloys used to harden it for jewelry.

It's price is generally relative to availability, a good rule is that it is usually just less then twice the price of gold - at market.

The diamond thing is a no brainer, believe it or not, many people prefer cz simply because, like many of us, we lose things! Most higher end jewelry stores won't carry cz's because why put a valueless stone in a valuable setting?

Overall I think it comes down to what you prefer! I prefer a platinum watch for two reasons. One, I don't want stainless steel, the watch I wear I love, and it isn't available in stainless steel. It doesn't appear very flashy, and I like that, my job requires me to get a little dirty from time to time and I the platinum doesn't dent or scrath as easily as the gold watch I used to wear.

It's all what you prefer, but I wouldn't worry about it too much, because usually the person wearing it isn't the person who bought it!

White gold will scratch/ding much more easily than platinum- it's a much more malleable metal, so if there are visible signs of wear, it's more likely to be white gold.

The white gold I've seen is a bit whiter than platinum- platinum being more greyed/silvery. A lot of platinum rings also have less of a mirror-like finish than the white gold.

Caveat: A lot of this depends on the alloy that makes up the white gold- different manufacturers have different "recipes", which will make the white gold slightly different colors.

platinum is much shinier than white gold/silver by looking at it? cubic zirconia is usually less sparkly than a diamond and it also differs on hardness... DIAMOND is the hardest among all of the above... hope that helped

As I have seen platinum and it has a slightly different look to it than white gold. It looks ..a little more tinnish, more silver looking than white gold. White gold doesn't shine as much as platinum does.

u won't see the difference now but in due time u will. i have a platinum bracelette and it looks just the same as my white gold chain but in a couple of month the bracelet started to have rusted spots not sayin u should care but i can't wear it anymore but i still got my chain around my neck. when i buy something i want it to last long enough for my friends to know its mine once they see it. so my fact is experience but if it is to foul ppl its easy to not see the difference.but don't think the quantity is the same that would be foolish

I've noticed that platinum is a darker grey silver than white gold and white gold is slightly more grey than silver and silver is the lightest.

Sorry, no facts for you from me. I do know that platinum, is MUCH harder than white gold. I would say that would cause it to not scratch as much. Do you notice a difference?

Sweetie, the difference is pretty much the price. Does that make sense? What happened, your boyfriend fool you with a cheap ring? No worries...After a while you would like not to wear the ring anyway.

the difference by just looking at it? platinum is more shiny than whitegold... whitegold is more shiny than silver. sometimes silver may appear to shine like an aluminum (sometimes... seems to have a mat look)... try to have these 3 precious metals and compare. :-)

well platinum is the least flexible....silver (depending on it's quality) is usually a lighter, more white color that white gold.
