1985. I got on the net through a vax system at my university. It was just e-mail, but it was really cool. A few years later, a friend encouraged me to get a compuserve account. Before 1985, I logged on to local BBS's, and a few of those had internet e-mail capacity, but i don't think those really count. I didn't use the net then. For a long time, I didn't use any of the graphical aspects of the net, I preferred text based browsers. But now i can hardly imagine a net without photoreal graphics and sound. And what I think is funny, is the the very first thing I did on the net -- e-mail, is something i still do.

In 1990 I got my first computer -- very basic by today's standards. In 1994 I got my first computer with a modem and a mouse! That was a great step up into the modern world.
