You need a big proton storm for a good aurora. A sunspot alone does not necessarily generate one.

http://www.spaceweather.com is a great source to see what is coming our way, proton wise.

There are some good "aurora prediction" sites on the net.

There are even places that'll send you an e-mail if they're visible, but that doesn't do much good if you're sleeping!
