The closest star to the Earth (having the largest measured parallax) is Proxima Centauri with a parallax of 0.772 arcseconds; it is thus 1.295 parsecs, or 4.225 light-years, away from us. The red dwarf star Proxima Centauri is part of the Alpha Centauri binary star system. At a distance to Alpha Centauri of just 1/20th of Proxima Centauri's distance to the Sun, Proxima may actually be in orbit about Alpha, with an orbital period on the order of 500,000 years or more. For this reason, Proxima is sometimes referred to as Alpha Centauri C. However, it is possible that it may not actually be in orbit, although the association is unlikely to be entirely accidental as it shares approximately the same motion through space as the larger star system

This contradicts the statement made earlier about the Alpha Centauri star being similar to our own sun.

Apha Centauri.

Alpha Centauri is a special star - not only because it is the closest stellar system to the sun but also because it is one of the relatively few places in the Milky Way Galaxy that may offer terrestrial life conditions. If humanity looks for intelligent life elsewhere, then Alpha Centauri is an excellent candidate.

Alpha Centauri A is a yellow star with a spectral type of G2, exactly the same as the Sun's. Therefore its temperature and color also match those of the Sun.

A star must pass five tests before we can call it a promising place for terrestrial life as we know it. Most stars in the Galaxy would fail. In the case of Alpha Centauri, however, we see that Alpha Centauri A passes all five tests;

Ensure a star's maturity and stability, the star is to have the right spectral type, a system must demonstrate stable conditions. The fourth condition concerns the star's ages. And the fifth and final test: Do the stars have enough heavy elements - such as carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and iron - that biological life needs ?

Unfortunately, we don't know yet whether Alpha Centauri even has planets or not.

One may conclude that Alpha Centauri is a most promising star system regarding terrestrial planets and possible life.
