I had the same question some time ago, when I noticed, in an outdoor gathering specially just before dusk, they bite some people more frequently and avoid some too.
I kept observing this matter for a while, and I realised the ones favourable to mosquitoes were either diabetic at some stage, or had just taken a lot of sugar, before the bites.
To prove my observation, I asked a relative to avoid sugar for a day and tell me the results. She came back, confirming they were attracted by her sugar intake. In fact she also had further blood tests and was advised to undergo preventive treatment for diabetes.
I think, the mosquitoes detect the intensity of infrared radiation from our body. That is how they can accurately pierce through a shirt, to hit a blood vessel. Sugar content in blood might somehow increase the infrared radiation, or our metabolism burning more sugar, generating more heat attracts them ?

1. If you're a smoker, you give off more carbon dioxide which attracts them.
2. Lots of potassium in your blood. It's like a neon sign over your head saying "free lunch".
Use a good bug spray, cover up and eat oranges not bananas to keep your potassium levels from spiking. Also, make sure there is no standing water around your house. Also, staying inside or even in a screen tent at dusk and night helps, if you can.

Some scientists in Japan discovered that mosquitoes prefer people with rare blood types. So if they go after you, instead of someone else, it probably means you have a rarer blood type than them, OR they have something in their diet that repels mozzies. (Garlic & Onion are good for this)

Mosquitos are attracted to things that smell bad. Maybe you smell.

do you eat alot of meat? mosquitos suck blood to get the protein to lay eggs..maybe they sense the protein?
