i've had the desktop for about 2yrs, just got a laptop, so i let my sis-in-law use the desktop.. now my laptop wont boot, when i push the power button it turns on then turns back off then turns itself back on then off over & over. so i got the desktop back and hooked that up, as soon as it's turned on and goes to the desktop screen messages pop up that say netscape, or int. explorer, what ever it wants has performed an illegal operation and either shuts everything off or if i don't do anything with it for a minute it'll just freeze up. is there anything i can do to fix either of these my self or am i gonna have to pay someone to get in there and fix them? any honest help is appreciated.

Take out the BIOS battery on the laptop for 3 mins.. UNPLUG THE LAPTOP and REMOVE THE BIG BATTERY... Unscrew two screws that will take the keyboard off, ( The underside of the laptop, useually twards the back center, . Flip it back over. There should be a strip at the top of the keyboard that will come off seperately from the keyboard that you have to remove first. (contains the power button and useually colume keys. once you get that off you can slide the keyboard out, and you will see a battery, pull it out three mins.... put it back in and replace the keyboard and the strip. PLUG it in..

Well as to the laptop it can be a BIOS problem (the one that switches on the pc from scratch loads HD and possibly Windows) or else a power supply prob.Well I dont think thats a user arrangable problem. If you take it to a tech near by mension what I told you it could help reduce the time they'll keep it.
For the PC it rather looks as a software prob it looks like a virus has warped windows up. In that case since Windows is surely ruined you need to format and by this time backup is not allowed cause when you ll put the backup back again the viral will re enter your pc and you ll need to start from scratch.

The laptop is most likely a hardware issue and needs to be taken/sent to a service center or computer shop that is qualified to work on laptops. It could be a large variety of problems. Expect to have to replace at least a little hardware (usually a bad connector).

The desktop most likely has enjoyed the company of a virus. Virus cleanup should be planned as soon as the PC is made stable. If your running windows xp you can do a Repair install (see link below) This will require having your original winxp disk. If your running windows 98 your going to need to do a full re-install most likely.
