Did you guys seem to forget about the Olympique Marseille scandal in 1994 or did you just bypass it??

Bernard Tapie was accused of fixing the match between his club and minor club Valenciennes; the motivation seemed to be that, in this way, he could save his best players for important matches and not waste their energy. His club was stripped of its French league championship, though not of the Champions League title, and later suffered a forced relegation to the second division because of financial irregularities widely blamed on Tapie. In 1994, Tapie was put under criminal investigation for complicity of corruption and subornation of witnesses. After a high profile case against public prosecutor Éric de Montgolfier he was sentenced in 1995 by the Court of Appeals of Douai to 2 years in prison, including 8 months non-suspended, and 3 years of deprivation of his civic rights. He was incarcerated for about 6 months in 1997.
Bernard Tapie was also prosecuted for tax fraud.

There's scandals everywhere. I believe there was also one in England that involved Manchester United and perhaps other clubs. "He who is without sin cast the first stone"...

I guess some French supporters (and not only them, also some supporters of the other teams that Italy defeated) find in the Italian match-fixing scandal the perfect excuse to blame their loss on "Italy cheating and bribing the referees and Fifa". The timing was perfect -- the trial in Italy was still going on when the World Cup started. Self-delusion is a common reaction to painful events or losses we can't cope with. Too bad that the whole Moggi thing didn't have anything to do with the World Cup...

P.S. -- Juventina, your new avatar is just WOW!

If all that happen to just one club and one man, I can just imagine what will come out of the Italian scandal with 1/2 a dozen club involved. Lippi was interrogated but I don't know the outcome. But I think the prosecutors went soft on them before they won the Cup. And that would also punish the fans.
Remember they even asked to erase everything if they came home the winners. I couldn't believe it.
As for tax fraud, that's the oldest trick in the book, for example that's the only way the Feds apprehended Al Capone and sent him to jail.

maybe because the italian league scandal coincided with the hoopla of the WC, and btw, it's not only the french who talks about it, it's big news everywhere. anyway, i think every pro football league has its problems and it's not about which league produced the more sensational case, it's about whether there's effort to resolved it or an attempt to simply sweep it under the rug. in the case of italy, true, punishments were meted out but there's general consensus that the sanctions were too lenient considering the gravity of the offenses and the magnitude of involvement of key personalities in the league. maybe that's why people still can't stop talking about it, the guilty were given a mere slap in the wrist, fostering the perception that italian football is rife with corruption and the authorities can't seem to deal with it in a more decisive manner.

hello juventina,
I don't know what's going on here anymore. Argument after argument, insult after insult. This was my favourite category at one time. Now it seems so full of hate for each other and each others opinions. What happened to respect ?
