Personally, I write it as 12 x 10^12 (and not like the others as 12 x 10^9). How you should write it will also probably depend on context and where you are from to avoid ambiguities.

000=hundredths
0000=thousandths
00000=ten thousandths
000000=hunred thousandths
0000000=millions
00000000=ten millionths
000000000=hundred millions
0000000000=billion
00000000000=ten billionths
you drop the zeros in the beginning and replace it with the number you are representing. ex ten billionths has 11 zeros...so you drop the 1st 2 and replce it with 12===12,000,000,000
