if your pc was fitted with a wireless adaptor then you wouldnt need to have to plug the ethernet cable in to the back of your pc.Netgear have a USB Wireless Adaptor which retails for around $50 here in Australia.
If you had a laptop, say, with built in wireless then again no cable would be needed between the router and the laptop

Wireless routers can be wired or wireless. You may need to be wired to configure the router, but once the router is configured properly, there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to go wireless. For each computer, you have to connect a usb adaptor to it to communicate with the router wirelessly. If it's a laptop, you have to connect a wireless card to it. You may need to install the software that comes with the usb adaptor or the wireless card.

Wireless routers use a radio frequency (example 801.11) to communicate with computers. you will need a wireless network card on your computer that uses the same frequency that the router uses. this is how they communicate. I believe the fastest is the 802.11G which transfers data at a rate of 54mbps. if you want to share the Internet with more than one computer a router is the way to go. that's when you will need to connect the Modem to the router via Ethernet cable.

Well if you have a second computer with a wireless card in it, you should just have to turn on the card on the second computer and it would be wireless.
