Some movies, like Syriana or Munich, try to see things from the point of view of the terrorists. They try to show terrorists as being "not all that bad," and that they're really just normal people like us with legitimate motivations. Also, the news media does this a lot. Does this really weaken our will and hurt us? Is it sympathizing with the enemy?

Jimmy Carter made the point that the only way to achieve peace is by working with "the enemy." Bill Clinton did this during his presidency by bringing Israeli and Palsestinian authorities to one table. That is why he was closest to bringing peace to the Middle East. By using this logic, people must be able to see things from the perspective of the enemy. By being ignorant of the views of other people, one will never achieve anything. There must be some concession on prinicple if one wants to progress human development.

There is no way for these movie producers to know what terrorists and "the enemy" was actually like. They try to present even handed views of the enemy because otherwise, the movie would be criticised as exiting anti-_____ hatred. I saw Munich and thought it was a good movie. Many Jews however criticise Spielberg for it because they claimed it was anti-Israel even though it only depicted Israel retaliating for the events a the olympics.
Spielberg loves to represent both sides in his movies. That is why Saving Private Ryan worked so well. He depicts the German's as (german shouting) pawns in the war - never even mentions the holocaust or what they did.

If you saw Pearl Harbor, notice how little coverage the movie had of the JAPANESE - the people who actually planned and bombed the harbor.
They took second place to the Amercan's love story.
Had the Japanese made the film though I'm sure it would have been about how brave and fearless the Japanese pilots were when they attacked.

I do not think empathizing with the enemy makes sense. First of all, we don't know their innermost feelings and secondly, at the end of the day they are still the enemy.
I think we should defeat/destroy our enemy and then let them make a movie about how they felt when they were defeated/destroyed.

Keep in mind that media is usually designed to DEHUMANIZE the enemy. That makes it easier for us to hate them and to want to kill them.
This tactic was used against Blacks, against Jews and is currently subtley used against Arabs (read: "terrorists") and Mexicans (read: illegal immigrants) n the media.

Sometimes I wonder why I hate communists so much.
I was born in 1981 and didn't know what Communism was until 10 years later - long after the Cold war. Its because the country's media socialized me to hate communists. In a communist country, people are socialized to LOVE communism and fear/hate capitalism.

YES, it really is SYMPATHIZING with the enemy to bother to see things from their point of view (empathizing).
take Iran for example. if you want to see their point of view, just learn Farci and listen to their media and what they say about America and Israel. Basically they want to "wipe Israel off the map" and they want to "destroy America". Why? "because we are INFIDELS and do not follow Allah".
Many people in the middle East are programmed to either want to convert or kill others.

To me, these people HAVE NO point of view except staring down the barrel of a US soldier's Colt M-4a1 carbine.

Why would we even want to see things from the perspective of the enemy? All I want to see is what the terrorrists did over here in the USA...they killed people who didn't even care if those idiots existed...all they did is get up, get dressed and go to work...never to return home....I don't want to feel sorry for those bastards...I hope we stay over there until we wipe them out.

Yes we should.
If we'll understand their Psyche, we'll be able to beat them at their on game.
See from their perspective not because they're right, but because understanding your enemy gives you advantages!!!

We do have to understand their perspective, but only as far as it goes towards defeating them.
