I ask this question because most people tip without knowing that most servers are paid $2.13 an hour. so when you eat 25.00 worth of food and service and leave 2.00 you haven't even paid for the hour you stayed.

Sorry BOO let me update your proper etiquette. It is 15% not 10% any more. That is whya 15% gratuity is added to large parties. Do your research! Love ya!

i have worked as a waiter at a high end place ($25 entrees) and a mexican place ($10 entrees) in the past, and i dine out all the time
i leave tips based mostly on the service but partially on the food and the place also (even though the waitress isnt directly responsible for the food and the place, she still has some influence on it, but that is why it is mostly based on the service)
tip on $60:
horrible service 2% $1.20
not good servic 5% $3.00
mediocre serv 10% $6.00
avg-good serv 15% $9.00
great! service 20% $12.00
incredible ser 50% $30.00
i try to make my long term average be 15%. when i was waiting tables, i reported a much higher percentage of my tips than anyone else, they were all guilty of income tax evasion and made really good money, and so did i, much more than i thought i deserved for the work i was doing (easily $10 dollars per hour, but usually more like $30/hour) and most people were not paying taxes, which raised the effective hourly rate to quite high levels.

A $60 bill would be a $10 tip. More or less depending on service. Some of you (I can tell) never worked in a restaurant. Min. wage is less than working in a retail store. I paid our day & second shift waitress $2.50 an hr and 3rd shift $3.50. If the waitress is good in an average restaurant she can easily get $80 - $100 in tips. In an 8hr shift this is $15 an hr. Do that in McD's.

I usually leave 20% because it's easier to do the math if it was good service. =$12 If it was really good I add a little more. If it was horrible I usually tip a few dollars.
I always feel bad when the kitchen messes up my order or doesn't cook it enough and then my meal is free...I always tip the wait staff 20% of what it would have cost cause it's not their fault and hey my meal was free.

I think $20-25 is fair considering your wages plus the taxes you get hit upon especially if it is left on a credit card. (That takes away 25-30% of the tip right away). Good service should be rewarded and most people don't have a clue about how much service industry people really make.

I always tip 15-20% depending on service. I would leave about $10-$12.
BTW, in CA, 18% is added for large parties and we have something called MINIMUM wage. I believe it's 6.75-7.15 per hour now.... where is the world is someone only making $2.13/hour? I'd quit!

I tip 20% usually, 20% for average service, 15% for sub-par but not horrible service, and 25-30% for excellent service, so assuming service was average I'd tip $12.00

I usually use the rule of doubling the tax noted on the check. We have an eight percent sales tax in San Antonio, Texas....so that usually works well...as long as the service is worthy.
