I agree, NEVER NEVER EVER clean a US or modern coin. It destroys most of the value. The same is true of almost any antique, it is the authentic surface or patina that collectors value, not something "new and shiny". There are RARE instances when a coin should be cleaned, but it is best left to professionals to do it then.

As for value, it completely depends on condition and mintmark, (a mintmark, if present, is below the eagles tail feathers). Check out a copy of US Coins and their Values, (known as the red book), to see an approximation on the value based upon grade. The book will tell you how to grade it.

Carbon tetrachoride used to be a favorite of collectors. It may be best to take it to a coin shop for cleaning. The value the clerk or owner gives you will be what he will pay, not what he will sell it for. Coin collectors have a blue book and red book , just like car dealers.

Best place to check for value would be to search for coin collecting web sites. They might also have cleaning tips. I have hears that a mixture of salt and vinegar works well.

First off don't clean it. Most coin collecters want them as is. When you clean it they almost always lose value.

Don't clean it.
Value depends on the condition.
