Why don't I feel any burning pains in my oesophagus? Could it be that my oesophagus has no sensors for the kind of pain caused by burning? And is swollowing very hot food that burns the mouth and tongue a bad idea? Am I damaging my oesophagus?

Your esophagus, like your stomach, is coated with a layer of mucus that prevents you from feeling the burn. This doesn't mean that the spice is gone, however -- if it's really hot, you'll feel it again coming out!
