Nina and Annie went shopping for clothes. They spent half of what they had, plus $2 at the shoe store. At the hat store, they spent half of what was left, plus $5. At the thrift store, they spent half of what was left. The remaining $5 was spent on ice cream. How much did they start with?

$5 for the ice cream
$5 x 2 = $10 + $5 = $15
$15 x 2 = $30 + $2 = $32
$32 x 2 = $64

Let x = the amount of money they had
x/2 = half of money
x/2 + 2 = money spent at the shoe store
x/2 - 2 = remaining money
(x/2 - 2)/2 = x/4 - 1 = half of what was left
(x/4 - 1) + 5 = x/4 + 4 = money spent in the hat store
x/4 - 6 = remaining money
(x/4 - 6)/2 = x/8 - 3 = half of what was left and the money spent at the thrift store
x/8 - 3 = the remaining money spent on ice cream.

since 5$ was spent on ice cream,
x/8 - 3 = 5
x/8 = 8
x = 64 $

Therefore, Nina and Annie had 64 $ to start with.

5*2= 10
10+5=15
15*2= 30
30+2= 32
32*2= 64

Now to double check

64/2= 32
32-2= 30
30/2= 15
15-5= 10
10/2= 5
5-5= 0

I hope that wasn't your homework though...
