years ago I used to use Murphy's Oil Soap it came in a bottle like Ajax's does and it mixed with water. I don't know if they still make it or not but I'm sure they do since wood floors are as prevalent today as they did years ago. Scratches I would use turtle wax on because it fills the surface that is scratched. Also for the real real bad scratches, a little dab of polyurethane in a can from the hardware store will fill it in real good. Use a tiny paintbrush so you can barely see the fill job.

I also have hardwood floors, I use one cup of vinegar to a bucket of water, and an old wash cloth rung out well, this is a down on the hands and knees job. Then I apply a coat of Orange Glo for wood floors. The Orange Glo can be purchased at Walmart. The Scratches you will have to live with unless you redo the whole floor

My uncle is a floor re-finisher. Do Not use Murphy's. He says to pour 1/4 cup of Windex in a gallon of water. Then lightly sponge mop. Another good cleaner is dishwasher detergent and water. I like the second one best because it seemed to fill little nicks and scratches and make them un noticeable. If the scratches are bad enough then raid your kids 64 box of crayola crayons. Find a brown that is similar in shade to your floor. color it in and rub off the excess wax with a dry rag and buff it up until it shines.

we have a beautiful and very expensive oak floor. no matter how many scratches you have DON'T EVER varnish it. we did, thinking we could get rid of the scrtaches, using the hardest varnish on the market. it cracks and leaves white stains. best to treat the scratches as suggested above and learn to leave them we will eventually remove the varnish.

Murphy's Oil Soap is the best! You might also try mopping with a cup of vinegar and a gallon of water.
