i have 4 tattoos... each tatt was done by a different artist. i tipped between $15-$30 depending on the detail and size of the tattoo. you have to remember that tattooing is a career... most artists are very talented and it has taken them a lot of time and dedication to do what they do best. even though tattoos are expensive... it is customary to provide a tip for their services.

Tipping is considered very polite; however, if you seriously can't afford it, they should understand, especially if you're getting an expensive piece done. Personally I always tip, and I give about 25%, but that is because my artist is really good, takes care of me and I go to him and only him. If you consistently tip your artist, they will remember and they'll be good to you. 25% is a little much, 10-20% is considered good.

In my experience, if I tip at least 20 percent I get better than average treatment when I use the same artist again.

Tip them if you feel like they deserve it (it's not like waitresses who get taxed on an assumed 15%). If they did a great job and you plan to have them do more work for you, then go for it. But if not, and you weren't really impressed with their bedside manner, then don't.

From what I gather, it's consider polite to tip, but if you don't want to pay money, give something like chocolate, anything will appreciated.
