Yes, Dante's Inferno is responsible for the mainstream view of Hell. Maybe Hell isn't an actual place, but a different level of...ah, never mind, hardcore Christians won't want to hear it.

As far as I know, the official viewpoint of th Catholic Church is that Hell is a state of being deprived from God's love.
As mentioned above, the firy place is just an invention of the Medieval Ages to express how terrible it is.

Read Dante's divine comedy for a Christian view of Hell. I've just seen the 700 club begging for money - now that's another view of hell.

in the time before the middle ages hell was actually a very Antarctic place,cold and hard to live with demon and all the likes,give thanks to the dark ages for inventing the fire
