You first need to store the unique IEMI number on your phone. For Nokia phones, press *#06# and write the number somewhere safe. for other make handsets, the procedure can be found at various sunjava forums or blogs.

Now comes the tracing part, every cellular service provider (and Nokia as well) has the facility of tracing the phone geographically (using the IEMI #), ie. they can pinpoint the exact location where the phone is being taken to. But they never propogate this because this will engage them in more work.

call your service provider, for calls made since you reported it missing or stolen. If you didn't report it stolen, you owe those bills after it was lost or stolen. However, if calls were made after you lost it, numbers might lead to the thief's home, acquantences, a matter, perhaps best investigated by law enforcement.

tell all your friends you want to buy a cell phone for cheap. It will get back around to you, because someone you know stole it.

The guy below me is referring to an IMEI number, the thief would never be dumb enough to put your stolen phone on his account.
